This is the wooden mailbox I finished just a little bit before joining lumberjocks. I made it out of cedar and spruce. It started as something to just mess around with. I screwed up a lot but I figured I would keep going just for the fun of it. Needless to say it actually didn’t turn out too bad. To make sure it didn’t leak I caulked it with silicone. I then stained it with min wax early American. And six coats of Cabot spar varnish. I then put it together and like any good former commercial fisherman I put a hose on it full blast for five minutes with a piece of paper inside. Surprisingly it didn’t leak. The mailman appreciates it and the wife likes it. In case your wondering about how I got the flag so perfectly triangular (which I don’t see why anyone would) it’s because it’s the inside of a speed square. Hope you like it

Now THAT is a fine looking mailbox!! I really like the way you did the roof. What keeps it closed? Magnets? Thanks for posting this.

It’s just a cheap cabinet and roller close latch from ace hardware. Nothing special. Thanks guys

the funny thing about this… is that just last week I went out to my mailbox….to find that the county plow pretty much murdered my new steel box when they cleared out the road from the recent blizzard. It’s not a small mailbox either, at 28” cubed. So I beat out the major dents and tweaked the door to make it close… kinda.
And then I thought “I wonder if I could rebuild this thing outta wood instead?—then the plow could hit it, and not dent the snot out of it….” All boxes are mounted on swing-posts thanks to our tax dollars and the county over the past few years. So a wooden box might just live longer than thin steely does. .... in theory anyway. Seeing your work here makes me wanna give it a crack
