This is the 5th chapter in my book entitiled Maloof Madness. I started building these rockers a little over a year ago after seeing Charles Brock’s demonstration at Woodworking in America. I have tried to make each one a little different, this one is black walnut with hickory spindles. (A belated Christmas present for my sister) I used the 3 step finish Charles advertises on Highland Woodworking site, basically and oil and wax finish. It came out with a very flat finish, I was able to get only a minimal sheen to it even with quite a bit of hand buffing. I have enough walnut stashed in my shop for about 10 more chairs, now if i could only find some 8/4 cherry!!!

great looking rocker. I know how much work goes into making one maloof style rocker, to build 5 in little over a year is pretty amazing.

Absolutely beautiful! 5 in a year! I’m still trying to work up the courage to tackle #1. I’ve got to add you to my list of heros.

Very nice, I love the design. Just got the wood for my first one, congrats on 5 in one year, I think I have been a couple of years getting to the first one. Great craftsmanship. What type of finish have you been using? Or is the three step finish your normal?

Awesome Rocker, really nice!
I’ve got 4/4, 5/4, 8/4, 10/4, 12/4, 16/4 Figured Cherry, it’s not hard to find.
I don’t have massive quantities, mostly half dozen of each, but I have a supplier that stcks all these sizes at ANY quantity.
The figure in the Cherry (some call flaming) is simply a better grade, I buy Cherry in 9”+ widths and get a quality grade…
oh, and, the 90/80 RED is the best, but only comes in 4/4
I used the 90/80 in my Dresser project for the bottom 6 drawers – http://lumberjocks.com/projects/79775
remarkable grain for Cherry. http://www.downesandreader.com/info/domestic-hardwood/cherry
Check out these guys (Downes & Reader) they ship Worldwide and have a Ebay store

Beautiful work. I’d like to see more pics of your chair.

I’m getting close to completing my 2nd Hal Taylor chair. I think you’re more diligent at staying on task than I am.
