My brother-in-law decided that we should have a gift exchange of something we created. We would all create something then draw names to see who’s creation we would get. So of course I loved the idea. After thinking about it for a couple weeks this is what I came up with. It started as a scroll saw project of cutting out snowy/mountain scene. Then it evolved in to that and custom building a frame. So I started with me wanting to steam bend some wood. I had never tried it before and so started scouring LJ site to find proceses. I found one that used a microwave to do it. WOW was I surprised at how well that went.
I had some Maple hardwood in my shop, and a large slab of Purple Heart. So I cut the rails and stiles out of the Maple. Then used my bandsaw to rip down some strips of Purple Heart. To add the bent wood idea I cut a curve in each of the rails and stiles to add a vein of Purple Heart. Using the method that LJer keifer had posted at http://lumberjocks.com/projects/74258 to bend my Purple Heart strips. Then once that was done I wanted to add a little bit more Purple Heart so I cut blocks for the corners.
I forgot to add that I had some Purple Heart knife blanks that I used to back the scrolled out scene too. I finished it with some Tung Oil. My Mother and Father-in-law have it hanging in their house.
