Yet another box. This is my favorite so far; the inlay ‘wraps’ around the thing, as opposed to just the top. I made plenty of mistakes, but I learned a lot as well. It’s for my Cousin’s graduation from high school.
It’s walnut with maple inlay. Finished with a touch of mineral oil, shellac and three coats of paste wax. My junky little digicam doesn’t really reflect the depth of the finish. It’s quite nice and I will be using it again.
I’ve only been doing this for six or eight months, and LJ has helped to inspire me to keep at it.
Thanks for looking.

Very nice, I love the way you wrapped the inlay around the sides. I just might have to try that sometime. Looks great.

Beautiful! The inlay wraparound was a great idea. It looks like ribbon.

This is a beautiful box. The inlays add visual interest to it.
Well done.

It’s really nice to see something different and new. This is it. Nice job on the inlay. (I need think outside of the box sometimes)

Very cool. I really like the way you wrapped the inlay. In spite of the camera, the finish really brought out the grain. Good job!

Great looking box, the inlay is a cool feature. What did you use to cut out the grooves for the inlay?

Napaman: Yes, those are hinges. I would have added a picture of it open, but the outside is more interesting.
jockmike2: After some testing on scrap boards I liked the color with the mineral oil. I don’t know why I tried it in the first place, I just like to experiment.

Beautiful piece of wood made into a very nice book. The wrap round inlay is very clever. Your cousin will be very pleased with this box.
