Well I’m finally done with these picture frames that i blogged about on my commissions series and i have got to say that they have been awesome and they are just so beautiful! really basic construction on this with just regular tongue and grooves but the things to me that really stick out are the Ebony pegs in the corners and the fact that the chamfer runs through the tongue and groove intersection and not just around the frame.
now to talk about the finish which was my favorite part as i have got to say that i am really liking the finishing aspect of woodworking almost as much as building now that i am successful at it and i have go a few successes so far. so the finish was 3 coats of danish oil doing nothing in between. then two coats of General finishes Arm-r-seal also doing nothing like no sanding in between until after the second coat when i rubbed the surface down with #00 steel wool. then it was time for the third coat of arm-r-seal and after that i rubbed down with #00 steel wool and buffed with a rag. it really brings out the color and the beauty in this hickory and all the pictures up top really put the finish to shame. also it is one of those things that i wish i could have everyone touch it as it is smooth as silk. so all in all this has been a really fun project and i know that the customer is going to like it!

Well done. These will look great with the mirrors installed. You will have to get a photo of them on the wall for us.

if you love to build and finish projects, you’ve got an upper hand on most woodworkers. I like to put the finish on but the sanding is where i have to make myself not skip cut corners.
great job

These look great! I think you’ll be getting more jobs. A good finish really puts the exclamation point on a nice job of building. Keep up the good work.

Excellent… Great joinery, nice finish…
If you don’t mind some unsolicited advice… when you’re taking close up pictures with your digital camera, use the “macro” setting… It’s usually a button with a flower on it, and it makes it so you can focus in much closer.
We’re not here to criticize photography though! Again, nice work!

thanks for the comments everyone. I keep forgetting about the macro button. i just don’t know why it’s so hard for me to remember.
napaman, if you haven’t get Charles Neil’s Finishing A to Z Beyond the Books. that is what really opened my eyes to finishing. it is almost 15 hours and it is just so detailed and is a ton of help.

Very nice frames I liked the details. I think that finishing is my biggest weakness. I have grown to dread the finishing stage of my projects. I is good that you enjoy it that gives you a definate heads up on most. Good Job

Beautiful work. I tell you what I wish I would have had a shop and tools like you when I was your age. Here I set at almost 42 and just starting out, again, and you make my stuff look like….potential firewood. LOL
What does my heart good is you are young and you have a love of the woodworking, and the talent. So rare these days in a person your age. My biggest hope is to get my son interested in woodworking like you. I do hope you keep up your endevor, plus some good $$ to boot. Thanks for the blog and posts. You keep up the good work. These frames look great! Nice contrast with the ebony, it sets the frames off as something special. I really like the hickory too. I’ve used it a few times, but it isn’t found much in my area.
Keep up the good work! Thanks for posting them.

Congrats on these, they look great. I really like the shadow line created by that chamfer at the tongue and groove joint. I know the feeling about the finish. I have had two successes in multi stage finishes so far and it almost makes you enjoy finishing instead of fearing it. If you keep that love of the finish stage you will go far as most of us hate that part because we always screw it up.

Thanks Shannon! like you said i think that successful finishes also build your confidence. before i wouldn’t go beyond poly but now as you said i am into multi step finishes and with more successes you build up confidence and are not afraid to try new finishes.
