We had to have one of our Maple trees removed this past winter. Sad day because it had been there since before we moved in 40 years ago. My wife wanted a wooden salad bowl, so this seemed like a good way to allow the tree to live on. The finish is just a couple of coats of Walnut oil.
Made some over sized serving utensils from Walnut to keep the Walnut/Maple kitchen whatnots theme alive.
Even though the roughed out bowl was dried for several months, it developed small crack on the inside during sanding. Fortunately the cracks didn’t go completely through the walls.
Thanks for looking.
Lew

Very nice looking bowl and utensils.
Too bad about the tree.

Very nice. Can’t go wrong with the walnut/maple combo. That is a nice way to put your old tree to a good use.

I agree Lew. That’s a great way to preserve the memory of the tree for your wife.
Looks Great!

The stress of turning near green wood can have its dissapointments but you have a nice piece of memory.

This is a nice bowl and utensil set. You did a nice job of finding a new use for the maple.
Well done.

Very nice. I took down an oak last year and it was sad because it was probably the oldest tree in the neighborhood. My neighbors moved in 42 years ago and said it big then. I have made pens and bowls and boxes out of it since and given them as gifts to all my neighbors because we all miss the shade.
Did you make the utensils in the picture too?

trifern,
I have been admiring your bowls for quite awhile and was a little reluctant to post mine because it couldn’t hold a candle to yours.
Thank you so much for the encouragement.

Very nice. I am very partial to pieces with a history and this is that.
I have several pieces of a maple tree that was always considered my wife’s ‘father’s tree’. He has since passed and the tree came down in Hurricane Juan. Been sort of saving it waiting for the right project and inspiration.

missed this the first time too. Lovely way to keep the tree living on. I’ve got a couple Civil war era maples I’d like to make something out of when their time comes – which I still hope is a ways off, they have the best color in the fall.
