A Cupcake for my Girlfriend

This is my attempt to navigate the perils and pitfalls of Valentines Day. I hope my fabulous girlfriend likes it. I totally stole the idea from scrollergirl, here. After looking at scrollergirl’s videos I thought to myself that this would be a better lathe project than scrollsaw project. Maybe that’s just because I have a lathe but not a scrollsaw. While this was a simple project there were some challenges like putting the saw cuts around the base to simulate the indentations on a cupcake. I had to build a jig to be able to present the base to the bandsaw blade to make the vertical cuts. It is quite simple but quite a mind bender to conceive it. The related challenge was then how space the cuts equi-distant around the base. I resorted to CAD and drew a circle and divided into 24 equal parts, 15°. Then I printed it and pasted it to the top of the base then I could make each cut and know the spacing would be correct. The sprinkles were way more time consuming than you would think. I actually had to hand plane 1/16”x 1/16” cross section piece of walnut then chop them w/ a chisel and they wanted to shoot across my shop never to be seen again. I killed pretty much most of a day on this little box. We’ll see next week if it was worth it.

That looks delicious. I wish I could get my real cupcakes to look that appetizing. I’m sure your GF will really appreciate this.

Very nice. Did you also make the earrings? They look like wood and quite tiny. Are you going to scroll saw a tiny red heart candy for the top? It definitely looks like a real cupcake.

No those are cultured pearls earrings, I bought them. I don’t know about the red heart, I thought about trying to turn an M&M and dying it red. I took the measurements from a muffin tin to get the size right.

She will love it – nice work. She better be careful though. If she leaves that sitting around on a table somebody’s liable to eat it. It really looks real. Congratulations.
