The original plan was to make six cherry dining room chairs to complement a table I had made the previous year. My first problem was that I already had a set of four chairs that worked perfectly fine (even if they weren’t the most stylish chairs). My second problem was the complexity of the design (at least for me, anyway) that I chose for the backs of the chairs. This was the project that I gladly put down to work on any other project that I could find. Finally, after about a year after starting, I finished four chairs and have pieces for two additional chairs cut awaiting sanding and assembly. I figure they will get done sometime this year (unless I find other projects that are less time-consuming).

I love the design of the chair backs! Looks like it was well worth the effort.

Very nice!
Chairs are a lot of work. I used to think they were expensive to buy since there isn’t much material involved. Now I think they’re cheap to buy!

Nice looking chair. Chairs still intimidate me. Maybe someday I’ll work up the courage to try one.

These are wonderful! I’m with Ted78…I don’t think I’m ready for chairs just yet. One of these days!

They look nice!! How many hours would you estimate per chair??

I like the double lower stretchers. Nice work on these chairs. Dining chairs probably take longer than any other project because of the number of parts. I have made 14 so far, and my son just asked for one in his room. Luckily I have enough spare parts milled for one more chair!

Thanks for the nice comments. MBS – I agree. I usually look at wood products and think “I’m not paying that. iI could make that.” Chairs now look like more of a bargain to me too. Don – Tough to estimate the time since it took more than a year to complete. I milled all the parts for the six chairs at the same time. I sanded and assembled one at a time. My guess is probably 10 hours per chair, but that is just a guess. I did learn some new techniques making the chairs. The top and bottom pieces on the back were steam bent to provide a slight curve for comfort. That was my first attempt at bending wood and it was easier than I expected. Made for some interesting angled tenons on the ends, however.

Looks great, sturdy and comfy. Like the design and the wood choice.
Have your say...
