This is a piece of hickory I got from my son’s firewood pile. It has open worm holes and some filled with what I suppose is worm poop but it looks like sawdust. I used a forsner bit to hollow out the recess for the candle.

It is 4” x 1 1/2”. Made of hickory. No finish yet.

Nice raiding the firewood pile, I love doing that… worm holes makes it that much better…glad to see you are heeled up and still turning…

Nice Job!

What kind of finish is recommended for candle holders?

Thanks for the comments.

Jeff I only got a little scar by my nose so I guess I came out ok.

Jesse I guess any kind would werk. Have to ask someone who is good at finishes.

Bill I trued up a couple of short blanks this evening that had worms still in them. Wrist still a little sore.

Hunter I guess you are right. Spent half day last Sat with my son cutting some pecan & china berry blanks from a land clearing burn pile. Must have sprang my wrist but soon as it gets better I will start on them. I painted them with some latex paint to help to keep from drying. Don’t know if it’s gona werk because it was a day and a half before I could paint them and they already had some cracks before I started the painting.

A friend of mine has a land clearing company and said I could go to anywhere he was clearing and cut what I wanted.
