Project Information

I came across this Santa in an article in Woodcarving Illustrated, Issue 37 by Steve Brown. I tried this santa a year ago when I started carving and it did not even come close to what it should look like. Here is my second attempt at it a year later and I am much happier with how this one turned out. Basswood, acrylics and matte finish and 3.5" tall. Thanks for looking.

Good work Mike. How do you hold it to do all those small cuts?

Mike,

I hold the carving by hand or rest it on a carving table to make the cuts. This one is not bad for making the cuts but he 2" tall ones are very hard to hang on to. I just read in another forum that another carver starts out with a 12" stick as a handle and then cuts the figure off of the end. I like to use up all of the wood and not leave much for scrap. Thanks.

It's so cute and pleasant to look. There's some rustic charm and heirloom quality to it. Great carving!
