16×9 Box Elder Burl with spalting lots of glue next time I am going to add stuff to the glue like stone or metal powders…I had my share of problems with it along with minor injuries…something that has never happened I bumped the bowl gouge tip while backing out of the bowl it was wicked broke the bowl and smashed my finger in a micro second…
This is just off the lathe with the first coat of finish barely sanded to 220 with more sanding and coats of finish it will look better…

Beautiful grain in the wood!
I'd be interested in seeing how you reverse checked it to do the base.

Jeff you did a good job of saving it. Haft to look good to tell where it split. Sure is a diff design.

Strange as that is what happened to me except I was going to take just a little more off the outside and it caught just a little and the next thing I knew I had blood on my glasses, My thumb was hurting and the bowl was laying on the floor. My thumb is just getting the feeling back.

Yeah same with me the bowl went flying finger and thumb are black and blue…I put a ratchet strap around the bowl and used CA glue to tighten the crack…guess it is like the liberty bell…guess we are lucky it was only minor injuries it could have been worse for us right

I am almost seeing that box elder burl is dangerous to turn. I had a simular experience turning a large bowl of box elder burl. The size was approx. 10"x8". I had began hollowing, with tail stock in place, and turning at a little over 1000rpm. I pulled the tail stock away…..........and turned on the lathe….....neglecting to slow the speed. Before I could react…..the bowl shook loose of the lathe and traveled up my arm…........leaving a bloody mess.
Other'n that…...........I love what I find in all my box elder burl. I started with a full pickup load…....and there is still that much to be harvested from that fallen tree.

Most of the woods around here are pine and oak woods. Some other minor species. I have never seen any burl before and at the start didn't know what burl was. After seeing what beauty is in them I wish I could find some.
