Well folks, here is a bowl turned from birch. My folks cut down this tree about a year ago and asked if I’d like to have the trunk…...how could I refuse. I found a local sawyer and ended up with 3 slab of 12/4 about 5 feet long and 12 inches wide. It was pretty dry, so there wasn’t too much waiting following rough-out…...basically had to find an hour or so when the kids were napping to finish it up. Anyway, any and all criticism is welcome, I still have a lot to learn….especially how to turn down the foot at the very end…..had a little trouble there, lol.

Later,
joe

A lot of folk turn the end, but some just use the BS to cut it off and sand it down. Really makes no difference, but if you are like me, you do finishing before you cut off your chuck handle so risking turning it off is dangerous.

Don’t birch turn really nice…good looking bowl you made it has nice form…next time for turning wood don’t pay anybody to saw it…you just split it get yourself two wedges and hand sledge hammer then take it to the band saw or chain saw it near round and screw a face plate to it….save money use the boards for other things…just a thought my friend

Make a simple jam chuck and turn bottom. You will end up with a small section where the rear center contacts wood which can be chiseled and/or sanded off.
