Hey,
As you can see I’m new to this whole LumberJocks thing, so I figure I’d jump in feet first and throw out a recent project for you guys. Normally we stay busy with custom cabinetry and architectural restorations so I really enjoy when the furniture projects come into the shop.
The sideboard board featured in the photos is a built of solid Black Cherry for all exposed surfaces and tulip poplar for the drawers and interior case work. The overall size is approx. 5’ 6 in length and 30” in height. Both the sideboard and the corner cabinet in a few of photos feature reversed raised panels to create a solid wood flat panel. For the joinery junkies out there, only half blind dovetails would work in this design so time to crank up the old chisel and backsaw. The finish is our proven danish oil and then pre-cat urethane that works every time.
LumberJocks has been helpful over the years for techniques and especially product reviews. We’ll see if I can get motivated and review of few of the winners and losers in our shop.
David

Beautiful piece.
The finish is perfect in my eye. Your technique embodies handrubbed beauty, with modern day protection.
5 Stars.
Two thumbs up.

Beautiful pieces of furniture, both this and the corner cupboard – which I assume is your work too as it matches the server. Love that cherry, great looking wood, and my favorite.
Keep up the excellent work, and welcome to LJs, nice to see your work. Thanks for showing.

David, Wow!.... nice side board.
I love this design and that you made it out of cherry instead of typical 1/4 sawn oak.
The black hinges are a nice look with natural cherry.
But, the hand cut dovetails really make it special. very cool.
Impressive 1st post! Welcome to LJ.

Firstly, welcome to LJ David. I hope you will be a regular contributor here. I have an good appreciation for Shaker design, but I have never fallen in love with it. This piece is the exception. Simple as it may be, it has something special about it that I can’t quite put my finger on. I guess it’s because the design, the wood and the finish just came so well together that it became and exceptional piece, at least for me. I’m looking forward to seeing more of your work.

Beautiful!, Really love the finish. If you don’t mind me asking, what do you mean by “pre-cat urethane”? Could I ask for a bit more details in your finish process?
