My first carvers mallet. I have always wanted to make one and having some 16/4 hard maple lying around I finally had a go at it. I am pleased with how it turned out. This was sanded with 220 on the lathe and then I hit it with some steel wool (also wile on the lathe). I am not sure how to finish it so feel free to share any ideas. I was tempted to just wax it.

nice work – bad day to be a chisel. I would just wax it, but that’s probably just me.

Bitten by the shopsmith lathe bug? Turning that beautiful maple wood and making mallets is a blast isn’t it? you just want to do it all over again….maple turns so nice…

One curvaceous mallet, like the wood and the wood grain. Looking good already.

Nice Mallet Dave, I like a once piece when that is possible.
