This box is intended to be a present for my mother who will turn 82 on February 3. We will combine a birthday celebration with watching the Superbowl! The box is made from cherry. The top of the box is made from aspen (white), red oak (center six-pointed star), douglas fir and poplar (light brown). The bottom of the box, the bottom of the inset tray, and inside of the lid are lined with goat skin leather. The splines are walnut. The small inset tray is made from cherry. The finish is several layers of amber shellac. I made a small button on the front center of the lid of three pieces, poplar, aspen, and douglas fir, for visual interest. The hinges are brass and mortised into place. The box will hold two decks of playing cards from a specialty photography company. The backs of the two decks will have contrasting images of my mother’s farm which is quite pretty. The decks fit into the inset tray. The bottom section of the box holds dice and small ballpoint pens for keeping score of games played.

Now I must thank the Lumberjocks who gave me assistance in completion of this project:

very cool box, and a great lid design. But you know what’s even better? You crediting the folks who shared here on LJ’s. So many folks share & never get any credit or just a thanks. Good on you.

That top is just amazing. The star appears and disappears depending on how you look at it. I’ve got to go study those blogs. Happy 82nd to your Mom. You demonstarted some real talent on this one!

Amazing box! Like the beautiful pattern on the top, great wood combo and joinery. Mom will be proud and happy.
