June 14th 2008 is ”World Wide Knitting in Public Day”. At over 500 locations across the planet on that day, knitters will carry out their craft in public parks, thoroughfares etc. Mrs YS is a keen knitter and will be, with her friends, knitting in the local museum gardens. She asked me to make this giant pair of knitting needles to catch the eye of passers-by.

thats cool. i didn’t know that there was a national knitting say, lol. the first picture is a little misleading, once i made it bigger i saw how big it really is and they are pretty big. thanks for the post!

The Seattle Mariners Basball team is very proud of the number of knitters who come out to celebrate knitters day. They say they have one of the largest groups in the world. It’s for sure they can’t be proud of thier winning record this year.

Those are some great needles—should eventually be a collector’s item. I have a large pair (plastic) which I used back in the 70s when it was popular to knit with 5 strands of 4-ply yarn. They’re about an inch in diameter but only about the average length—14-15 inches. They certainly made quick work of knitting a sweater (if you like the REALLY bulky look). Post a picture of Mrs. YS in action with these! She could probably turn out a king-sized afghan in a couple of hours!

Following your suggestion napaman and lwll, Mrs YS is keen to give them a try after I dismantle the rig (they’re screwed to a wooden former within the ball). I’ll report back – eventually. EdC – I admit to being mischievous! That’s interesting about the Seattle Baseball team though. fredf – yes that’s about right. Ben – thanks for that link; makes our look minute!
