First Goblet

This was my first goblet ever turned. I had a piece of maple given to me that just looked like a piece of firewood, split from a big log. I figured it was maple so it would be hard and turn and finish well, and be strong. I was thrilled when I began to turn it and saw all the spalting inside! I was very pleased with the final result. I was a little disappointed in the finish, I think it was two coats of Arm-R-Seal. Nice matte finish, I was hoping or a little more gloss.

I tried a recipe I got from someone else on another project since, of a coat of oil, (orange oil in this case) followed by two coats of shellac, followed by 2 coats of gloss poly. I like the result much better on that project.

Thanks for looking, any feedback or advice is always appreciated.

Nice ! Looks like the maple wasn’t too punky. That’s the bane of spalted maple . . .
