I love mesquite and live edge projects and the last one of these I made sold so decided to do another. Dimensions: 11 1/2×7 1/4×5”. Drawer box of pine. Finished with shellac (same technique as the last box). Longhorn cowhide in top. Some fun facts: the recess for the cowhide was done with a Craftsman router that was made in 1958. The box joints on the front are to balance the look of the case and have no other function. The feet on the drawer keep it from tipping if pulled out too far and they add visual ‘Balance’. I’m almost out of mesquite so you can see that I had to piece some smaller pieces together for the back. Mesquite is hard for me to come by so I try to waste NONE. This was another fun one!

Very very nice Andy. The cowhide and the mesquite go good together. Hope you find more mesquite.

Very nice Andy.
That piecing together you did for the back would look real nice if you done a whole box with panels like that. I like it.
I enjoyed the top as well. I thought when I first looked at it, “look, the wood on the top looks like cowhide”. Then I read the post and realized that it IS cowhide. Nice way to add something to the wood. I have seen leather and such in a drawer, but I hadn’t thought about putting a piece of hide like that on top.

Really nice box Andy. I am also a Mesquite fan and you have done the mesquite proud – oh, the long horn would have been proud too:-)

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. Love it.

I really need to get to my cousins in west Oklahoma and get some of that.

Very cools Andy – the cowhide is quite unique and using up the scraps for the back is certainly a good use of wood in my book…....I love using up those scraps…...The drawer design is new right? I like it….

-- Jeff - I have not failed. I've just found 10,002 ways that won't work.

Thanks for all the comments and entertainment! Jaykaypur- Mesquite won’t grow in NE Oklahoma (I planted seeds and got sprouts but they all died and I have never seen a mesquite this far North or East). Marty- Clara Bell has a lot of hide (I’ve still got more!). Jeff- The feet are the only new design feature on the drawer. Mine are all box jointed with ‘false fronts’. Is that the correct term?

I really like the mixed media idea with the hide.
The finish looks really good as well and the piece-up in the back is pure character.

Sweet !!
