Another box, this time a small Jewelry Box for my Sweetheart, Debbie…
She has been there for me, through thick and thin, for twelve years now (though we’ve known each other since 1977!)
This bit of work is to thank her… for everything…
It has Red Oak sides, Philippine Mahogany top and bottom, and Maple Hardware. The trays were made from the same Red Oak (for sides), and for what it’s worth, were also matched and wrap-around…
It was a pleasure to build… :)

I don’t know if it was just luck or your good eyes but the mahogany any oak match up very well. I am a bit angry at you…for setting the V-Day bar so high! Well done Mike.

Very nice work. I took a few minutes and had a look at some of your other boxes. The one major thing for me was your hinges and latches. I love how you keep changing them and they are very creative. I’m fairly new to woodworking and Ive enjoyed trying different ways to make the box unique and not look like an assembly line piece. I hope to try more latches as I have just been experimenting with hinges. Some of your hinges,(the long ones) I don’t know how you get them so straight. Any tips and please have a look at my stuff. Thanks for posting Johnny”R”

Mike a great box but I think I had better hide this one
in case Shirley sees it, I’m trying to get away with a card :)

Nice one Mike.
I always notice your work but this fine little box caught my eye because I’m working on one at the moment with wooden hinges and a wooden catch (different) myself.
You do nice work.

Dan: Thanks for the kind words Dan… You have quite a talented Cat my Friend! :)
A1Jim: Thank you too Jim!
Lenny: I’m sorry about that, please don’t be cross!! To be honest, I knew that I was making this for Debbie, but it’s only Happy Circumstance that it was ready sometime in the neighborhood of Valentine’s Day… :)
John R: Thank You and Welcome to LJ’s!! I checked out your work my Friend… You’ve got Good Things going on, definitely not Assembly Line Work!!
The “Hardware” is often the most enjoyable part of creating boxes for me… There are no limits to the possibilities!!
As far as your question about “long” hinges, they keep themselves straight simply by sharing the same hinge pin through the length of them… If I’m right about the ones you’re referring to, I blogged their construction here ...
If you’re interested, I rambled on at some length beginning here too, about some other kinds of hinges…
Ellen: She did and does my Friend… :)
Jamie: I’m just hoping that this gets me out of having to put anything in it this year!! :D
Topo: Debbie is very happy with it Bob!
Lew: It is indeed, the most fun my Friend… :)
Shipwright: Thank you Paul. It’s hard not to notice your Work, it is amongst the best on Lumberjocks… I look forward to what you’ll be coming up with on your new project!!
Kristoffer: Where have you been Buddy?! It seems like ages since I’ve heard from you… I hope everything is well…
I read yours’ and everybody’s comments to Debbie… We both really appreciate them! Thank You very much!!

Nice “VD” present Mike. This box has so many features that indicates the amount of time you put into it. You know I love your hinges but that catch is pretty crafty and the way you mortised the handle into the tray: VERY crafty. Debbie looks like a keeper to me. Keep havin fun.

That is just beautiful, Mike, a work of art!
Someday I’m going to try your technique of making special hinges and catches.
