Feels good to be inspired again. 2012 was so nuts I had no time to woodwork.

Just finished a fly rod wrapping jig and took it out for a spin at the Kentukiana Fly Fishing show put on by the Derby City Fly Fishers. My good friend Gary Krebs and I represented our local fly fishing club Tippecanoe Fly Fishers. Gary is a very talented inventor and fly tyer. Here’s a link to his instructional videos and his fly tying products.

I have been building many fly rods lately and wanted a nicer rod wrapping jig. It’s modeled after the Flex Coat wrapping jig but I added brass hardware and gave the rod supports a way to slide. Finish is Watco medium brown and Watco satin poly. There’s a rare earth magnet in the lower right to hold a razor a ruler.

Well done! Been dreaming of how I want to build one. I make mostly 1 piece rods so I want something a little longer. I like split grips so I have some difficulty doing the butt wraps on my small one. Enjoyable hobby.

Nice Job really like the use of the brass. Where did you get the springs on your thread tensioners? I use the same style tensioners on mine but the straight springs get under the washer occasionally and bind things up.

Thanks guys. I looked for the lightest pyramid spring I could find at Ace Hardware.

Interesting John. Nice job too. But for us non-fly fishers, could you show a pic with the rod in place being used? Thanks. :)

Very nicely done. I’ve often thought about building my own fly rods, but I don’t have time to use the ones I already have, so I’ll add it to that ever growing “bucket list.”
