It seems like being a woodworker generally coincides with a continuous curiosity for knowing how things are made… I have this bug, like so many of you. When I figured a lamp would be a good addition to my portfolio the wheels started spinning. It was all I could think about for weeks, what kind of light? What aesthetic? How am I going to __? Well, you know how it is.
Never having done any lamination bending, I wanted to try it so bad, so that was my first qualification for the new lamp. As well as learning to wire the LED’s to give it that sleek profile. The lamination bending was pretty straight forward except it had to be done in 2 stages with a center ply being routed out for the wiring and LED’s to travel through. Probably the most difficult part of this build was finding what size resistors the LED’s needed to efficiently run off a 9V battery(notice no cord).
All-in-all I’m pretty happy with the outcome and my dad was psyched for his ”#1 series prototype” from the shop!

Great design and work.

Looks great… Do you have any pics with the light off to see the light output?

I really like your design.
Is the light dimmable?
Great use of LED’s.
I’d be interested in learning more about the wiring.

Thanks for the good words guys! It’s awesome how supportive this community is!
@ Jaybird – It isn’t dimmable, but that’s an awesome idea! Might be in the second prototype!
@ Zboom – I don’t have any pics w/ the light on, but I’ll be sure to take them on the next go around.

Very cool design!
I’m curious as to how much current the LEDs draw – 9V batteries don’t have much capacity. More efficient than resistors are LED driver modules, such as this one, but I’m guessing that your LEDs don’t draw that much current.

nice lamp!
the LEDs can be replaced if some die or are fixed?
btw, resistor value for led calculations can be really easy

@lcwood – the first version of this lamp they are fixed in there… Something to consider for future models for sure! Good thinkin’! I stumbled across some calculators after a bunch of research and they are great, this was my first go at wiring something like this, I have done a lot of computer builds and home wiring so it wasn’t too much of a leap, but finding the resources sometimes escapes me. Thanks for the links, I’ll probably be coming to this thread/your links for future calculations!
@ DickB – I hadn’t come across these drivers, the LED’s I have are to the following specs 3.0~3.4, 3.2v typical, 24mA max, 13000 mcd. Should I consider a driver module or should the 9V w/ resistors be sufficient? Thanks!
