Fireplace surround with corbels (2 of 2 designs)

This is very nicely done. At first I wondered why a fireplace would have a jointer and vacuum inside it, lol.

I’ve got a friend that is wanting to build a fireplace mantle for his new house, but can’t figure out how to mount it against the brick that is currently there? What is the common practice for attaching to the wall? I’m trying to do as little damage to it as possible since it will be painted before the install.
