The shape of the bowl turned from this chunk of seasoned and spalted box elder changed multiple times while turning – which isn’t unusual when I either make a mistake or change direction based on what is exposed during turning – which is okay I guess… :-)

Jim,

This is a gorgeous bowl. I really like the spalting that you exposed.

Thanks for the post.

It’s so neat to take a block of wood and take away everything that isn’t suppose to be there to revile the beauty of it’s end result.
Great job.

Pretty wood. (One day I would love to learn to turn) You have a good eye for this.

Jim, very nice! I agree the spalting looks great and it’s a beautiful piece.

I have some spalted maple I was planning for a box, but after reading some warnings here on LJ about breathing the sawdust, I’ve put that on hold. But, I was wondering though…did you have to apply any hardener to the wood either before, during, or after turning? The maple I have is almost too soft in places to work with.

Thanks for posting it.

It amazes me too, how you can have a block of wood and inside of it are endless possibilities. This is a terrific bowl! Great job! Thanks for the post!

Woodhacker –
Apoligize for the delay in responding to your question – been travelling a bunch and haven’t had time to look at the website.

I didn’t have to apply any hardener to this particular piece b/c there weren’t any soft spots but I have had issues in the past and have used thin CA glue then spritzed it with accelerater to harden the mushy stuff – works great just do it in a well ventilated area, the fumes are nasty…

Cheers,
Jim
