Simple but large picnic table

This table was for one of my delivery guys, the Schwann’s truck guy. He ordered the table from me with specific requests for dimensions that would allow him to sit at a picnic table comfortably. He is a big guy.

I built this table using 2X6 lumber from my local home improvement store, and it seats 8 comfortably. I think it’s pine, but I’m not sure. Whatever 2X6 lumber they are pumping out in mass quantities for housing. I used weather treated screws, and he will be finishing it to match his deck, so no finish applied.

The tabletop is 74 inches by 34 inches, and the bench pieces are spaced to they are 12 inches, and of course by the same 74 inches.

It was a fun project, and even the boys got involved holding pieces here and there for me.

I remember years ago 3 of us sitting down at a picnic table once.. like dummies we all sat on the same side and yep, it see-saw’d us right to the ground. We looked at each other and all said at once “Why dont they build a picnic table that doesnt do that?” :-)

Excellent job. The “big guys” will be VERY PLEASED!

Joe I think I have built at least 100 picnic tables over the years. My first few were prone to flip if everyone sat on one side. The secret is to put plenty of angle on the legs so the bottom of the leg extends well under the seat.Great looking table very solid I have seen them with 2×4 legs but the savings is not worth the extra strength and stability you get from the 2×6.

Thanks for all of the nice feedback. I had no plan for the table, so I made jigs with pieces of wood screwed together at the angles I used to make this table. I have a feeling more than just “big people” will want a table this sturdy.

I guess I should clarify… Not full sized jigs that the lumber fits into, but some small angled pieces labeled with what the angle is for.
