Walnut and Poplar display box with a secret.

Many golfers (including myself) collect ball markers from various courses (the picture shows one from the Masters I got a few years ago). Some golfers display the markers in frames and others let them collect in their drawers or golf bag pockets. I wanted to display my golf ball markers but I did not want to hang them on the wall in a frame. Additionally, I needed a spot to store all my accessories (divot repair tools, yardage books, etc.). To meet my needs I came up with a simple box to store the golf accessories and “stick” my ball markers to the lid.

While the box may look ordinary, underneath the walnut veneer is the secret: a thin piece of sheet metal. This enables me to stick each magnetic ball marker on the lid. Some ball markers do not have magnets, but to solve that problem I insert rare earth magnets between the marker and the lid to hold the non-magnetic markers in place. All the markers stay put even when the lid is opened.

The first picture is prior to finish and glue-up. The remaining pictures are following glue-up and finish. The final picture shows an all walnut version of the box with cherry accents.

That’s a good looking box Trev. We all have our little collections of things and need a place to keep them.

Hey guys. Here’s a rookie question but how do these hinges work. Is it two holes and a pin that pushes into itself to fasten it? Hope that makes sense!
