Last week I showed a mailbox that I had rebuilt for someone.
Before:

.
After

One of the things I did was put a metal roof on it because the old wood roof had completely rotted away. When I cut the first roof out of sheet aluminum I cut it too short, but I saved the mistake roof for use later. Well, now it’s later :-)

Using the roof for size, all I had to do was build the box to fit under it. Her mailbox had a “carport” on the left side for newspaper delivery, which we dont have here. So I decided to add a “garage door” and close off that side. If the newspaper situation changes, All I gotta do is knock out the garage door. Here’s a few pic’s from mockup to finish.

The garage door is a piece of poplar that I planed to about 3/16”, then I cut the grooves to define the door panels on my radial arm saw. The door is finished with about 6 coats of rattle can clear gloss and the house has about 5 coats of gloss white house paint.

Just wondering if the “garage” has a separate purpose and does it open?

I used to work for Mailbox Factory in Kirtland Ohio and we made hundreds of custom mailboxes. It was a great niche market. Want to revive it in Tennessee?

Sweet mailbox Joe….. does the garage door come with opener on base model or is that extra??? Very Cool project

Natalie, IN the original box I re-did for a friend the “garage” side was where the newspaper was delivered. Since we dont get the paper I closed off that half and made it look like the garage door is closed. I put 2 tiny nails to hold it in and sealed around it with clear silicone (to keep the rain from going in that part). If necessary I can just punch the door out to open that up.

Hybridwoodwork, hadnt thought of that. Might just be a niche market for these, eh?

No Buster, it’s “non-electric”. But a good healthy punch will open it pretty quick.

Thanks for all the kind words folks.

That is great! I just hope you don’t live someplace where vandals enjoy trashing mail boxes!
