Finally finished this. Since I’ve had the lathe, my time has been spent learning and turning…
This is another found piece of wood. I was hiking one weekend on Baldface in the White Mountains in New Hampshire, and I fell and bent one of my aluminum trekking poles. I picked this up, and it filled in for the rest of the trip. It’s been sitting in my workshop since (2 years?) and I figured it was time to give it some lovin’.
It’s a simple sand and shellac finish, the handle was carved in and filled with two layers of 1/16” cork. I reinforced the tip by drilling it out, adding a 1 1/2” screw and wrapping it with galvanized wire, then shellac’d the heck out of the whole thing… there’s at least 10 coats there, sanded with 400 grit in between each.
I really like the variations in the color, that’s all about sanding off what comes off easily, and not getting too aggressive with removing the bark. Hope y’all like it!
