These are Hope Chests for my teenage daughters. These are the full size versions. The one’s I built last year were the prototypes for these two. (see my other posts)
The one on the right is walnut and 20” tall, 17” deep and 32” long. They have cedar lining and a secret bottom for jewelry or documents. They include a small removable sliding drawer for gloves or other small items. Finish includes shellac sealer, gel stain and 3 coats of wipe on poly.
These are a a lot of fun to build. I use a Leigh jig for the dovetails. The bracket legs are made via the cove cutting techniques on the table saw. They look great and very easy to make once you know how.
Next project is another one one these but larger with two drawers on the bottom for my wife.

Great job there Bob. I bet your daughters are thrilled. One thing about it, I will have to keep my daughter off this site. She is going to see things like this and say “Dad, can you build me something like that?” Well, maybe in a few hundred years. Keep up the wonderful work. You have created a treasure that will be passed down for generations.

Excellent job! How did you put a secret compartment in the bottom?

Biff,
The compartment is just a false bottom of cedar.
Karson, Will do.

Bob,
These are nice chests. I am sure that your daughters loved them as you did a wonderful job on the design and construction.
Well done.

Hi Bob;
Very impressive work!
Did your daughters have any trouble deciding which one was who’s?
I’m wondering why your wife wants a hope chest.
What is she hoping for? Maybe she’s not telling you something. LOL

Lee, Haha, she’s been hoping I build her one for the past 24 years, now that the girls have one, I have no more reasons not to build one for her.
