This is a pen/pencil/box set I made for my boss as a retirement gift. The pen/pencil are made of wenge and are American Slimeline style purchased from Woodcraft. The box I made from Cherry. You can see the trouble I had in routing the grooves. I held the pieces too long at the end without turning off the router and as a result there was burning at the end of the grooves that was very hard to remove…I didn’t get all of it.
I used mini barrel hinges to join the two box halves.
The “B” inlay is walnut and is the first letter of his last name…(or maybe it stands for the “B” in “Boss”).
When it was time to give him the set, he commented it would be hard to bring himself to actually use them… I think he meant that in a nice way. :)

Gorgeous pens and nice box.
My minister tells the story of receiving a custom made pen. It was so nice he never used it because he was saving it for a special occasion. He was officiating a marriage several years later. The groom was one of the youths from the group who had given him the pen. The minister had a brilliant idea of incorporating the actual signing of the marriage license into the wedding service. To his dismay, the pen would not work and he had to borrow one from someone in the congregation.
Sorry for the mini sermon. Great projects and thanks for sharing it.

Well done set of pens and box. I’m wondering if you would blog your inlay technique?

Martin,
This is a gorgeous set. I am sure it would be hard to use them at first until he gets accustomed to his retirement.
Well done.
