Round bottom plane

I attended a two day class in David Fleming's shop in Scottsdale, AZ where we made a round bottom hand plane. I learned a ton and David is a awesome teacher and coach.

These pictures were taken the end of the two days before I shaped the tongue and before I added an oil finish.

Nice work. Why did you want a round bottom?

I didn’t particularly want to build a round bottom plane…my good friend had already made one with a flat bottom so he wanted to make one with a round bottom. I was game either way since I was learning the process. Now I have a round bottom plan to go with my 4 flat bottom ones!

Maybe a better question is what do you do with a round bottom plane?

- TopamaxSurvivor

You can use it to hollow the staves when making a coopered bucket, according to James Gaster in “How to Make a Coopered Wooden Bucket”.

I agree with TopamaxSurvior’s comment about “what to do with a round bottom plane.

I haven’t made a bucket yet, so that means I have never used the plane other than some test runs. The process of learning to make this plane was very rewarding, and it paved the way to build several flat bottoms planes.

I have to agree with those that say there’s nothing better then making and using your wooden planes.
