I really like George Nakashima’s furniture, so when I saw his room divider piece I had to get out in the shop. The design proportions and base are really cool so that is the basis for this box.

I knew I wanted to build it out of some quarter sawn sycamore I’ve used on a few other projects and really like. The sides are made from one piece so the grain wraps around three corners. The center dividers are also sycamore. The top is one piece of spalted maple and the base and handles are walnut. I finished it with danish oil and rattle can lacquer. The inside bottom is lined with navy velvet.

Beautiful piece

-- Mother Nature created it, I just assemble it. - It's not ability that we often lack, but the patience to use our ability

Thanks! I found this spalted maple at Metro Hardwoods in Independence Missouri, they had smaller pieces, like 1.5 to 2 board feet. You should be able to find it online too.
