I built this bed for my new bride of just over 1 year for a christmas project / gift.
Since we combined houses and i just finished the shop over summer.
With new and used tool additions and my recent work bench done I figured it was time to get busy.
I found some ideas online and came up with this design.
Some material is recycled 1/4 sawn oak from some church pews, the rest was purchased at my local saw mill.
I am very fortunate to have a mill here in town that also has a kiln and does have a nice selection of all kinds of wood.
The bed is all quarter sawn oak with qt. sawn oak ply panels.
All mortised and tenons on the foot and head boards.
A simple mission oak stain, then rubbed out with mineral spirits to get rid of some inconsistent spots and after drying and clear shellac finish.
I added 5/4 pine slats after adding a 1inch angle iron bracket along the bottom of the side rails.
This worked out very well for mattress support.
This was a true joy to build and I also had my father in law help with a little sanding. It really made him a proud to help out.
