I had a special request for a Retro 1950’s looking box. Not sure how retro it is but this is what I came up with…14×8x6 cypress with 5/16 dadoes inset with alternating Padauk and Walnut. The finish is lacquer that is buffed and waxed.

1950s? My first thought was more prospective, modern, something ahead of our time.
Very nice Greg

What a beautiful box… Well, of coarse, coming from you. :) I really like the design, and the wood combos. Very kool, as always.

If you look at the 1950’s jukebox’s, they had the same type of lines as your box does. You have captured what the customer was looking for.-don

Very nice Greg. I’m sure the customer will be very pleased.
What wood is that for the top & sides?

Thank you everyone. This was a bit different than what I normally design and I did not know what to come up with as REtro 1950’s.
majuvla...thanks…I always make an attempt at being unique because there is so much common around today.
drew224...I never thought of it as art deco but I need to study art deco more…thanks.
Monte...I like the color combinations of the cypress, padauk and walnut…putting in the miterred inserts was challenging since the miters were small.
Deon...thank you…it is always fun when in my shop.
Florida Art…I really need to study retro 50’s more (and art deco) and incorporatew them more in my sculpting as well…
Blackie...it is interesting how we all view a design style differently..That is what makes it fun..!
EmeraldDragon..never even though about jetsons…gotta give george a second look…
Tag84...I remember an old radio with this design that my parents had long ago when i was a kid. I rember the glowing tubes it had inside and it played AM radio.
Roger...thanks…be careful about that resawing..heal up.
Steve…I appreciate your comment.thanks
amagineer...you hit the nail on the head when you said it looked like a 1950’s jukebox. That is primarily where I got my idea from a old album cover of 50’s music.
rance...the wood is cypress and the inserts are walnut and padauk. The original idea was to have the two levels of the inserts…with the padaul alternating pieces setting lower. I glued in the pieces on the box and when it came time to inset the piece on the top, I found it not sticking out enough to get a good grip for the lid. oops!

That’s a winner. Great looking retro box. I like it.
