Treasure Chest For Card Game

We play an awesome game called Munchkin our house. A while back we got a version called Munchkin Booty, a pirate-themed set. Since then, we’ve added two more expansions and a dire situation occurred. Nothing big enough to store all the cards, rulebooks and paraphernalia. So I got some inspiration out of the closet, a ton of reclaimed wood out of the back of my shop and took a few months (whenever there was free time) to cobble this baby together.

Made from repurposed cheap-o bunkbed wood (both pine and birch), plywood from a desk, handles from a cabinet, and brand-new (subsequently battered) hinges.

I used a hammer, saw, rasps and rocks to beat the crud out of this thing, gouge it and make it look like it had been through a few shipwrecks, battles and drunken maroonings on a desert isle before being dug up and put to use.

Finished with stain made from coffee, aniline dye, Minwax oak stain and then Poly clear coat.

I don’t get much time to work in the shop, maybe a couple hours every few weeks, so this took way too long to finish.

Its rough, its tough, and I love it. Excellent creativity.

May have taken a long time, but the results are awesome.

Thanks, guys!

I’m very proud of my sword slashes and all the wear-and-tear. That took me a while. Durned thing was ugly as freshly sanded wood. I should’ve taken pictures of progress. BORING before I did the damage and finishing.

Very cool! What kind of finish did you use?

I used a bunch of stuff to get this finished:

Home-maid stain made from coffee (including the grounds which are ground into the wood with cloth), a heavily watered-down acrylic black paint wash, red and orange aniline dyes, Minwax golden oak stain and then about 5 coats of clear Poly.

All of these together got me the weathered look with a lot of variety so it didn’t look like hand-painted design. I put the poly on because I want this thing to last a long time with kids handling it.

this is a really cool build, you could make these and sell them for this game…i love the distressing you did, it would fool me, i could swear this came from some old cave that some pirate stored his booty…maybe you should get a parrot to stand guard..

Excellent job and yes, Munchkin is an awesome game, although when we get together we wind up playing Magic the Gathering. I need to build some new boxes for those. I have about 8,000 cards. My brother wants a box exactly like this for his Magic cards. I’m copying. ;)
