I’m using up some more of the live-edge walnut that I got a couple of years ago. By the time I machined it flat, it’s kind of too thin to make any kind of table top out of. However, I still wanted to display the unique look of the slab. I came up with this shelf design using the walnut as the decorative backer, and hard maple boards as the shelves.
The shelves are asian influenced and designed. They have a curved front, and are tapered in thickness from the inside, slightly over 3/4”, to the outside, slightly over 1/2” thick. They are simply screwed through the back of the walnut with (4) ea 2” screws. Ended up being very rigid.
The finish is 3 coats of brush on lacquer. I put a couple more coats on the bark to seal it in. We’ll see if it stays on or not
