I saw this parts organization holder in an issue of Family Handyman, however I changed it to hold 8 bins rather than 6. The only tricky part is cleaning out the empty oil bottles. My solution is to first drain the contents for a day or so, then mark the cut line using the tote as a guide. I use scissors to cut on the line and then I soak the bins is a 5 gal bucket with soapy water for and hour or so. I scrub the lable off and dry the inside and they are okay for nuts and bolts. 1/2 inch baltic birch or any 1/2 in plywood scraps will do and you have a neat gift for someone when you can’t think of something. I have friends at an auto repair shop that save me the empty bottles and I keep one or two completed totes around all the time.

Nice idea! Another way would be to purchase some cheap Tupperware knock-off containers and build to those dimensions.

Bob,
This is a nice idea. You get to recycle the oil containers and use scrap material for the tote frame.
Well done.

I actually did the same thing but without the container. Used them to store my sockets in. Worked really well. Now I have been given even a better idea to use them. Thanks.

Bob, Neat idea. I got something similiar in metal as a house warming gift a few years back but it had beer in it, Since I only drink sodas I have used it a couple of times for my flavored sodas. These could be eaisly adapted to hold a few bottles of something and serve as a cool gift.
May have to try my hand at making a few.

Good idea. It looks like it could be used for or adapted to be a silverware tote.

You have given a very good idea to make parts organiser. We have varities of hardware and it is always a problem to classify and store them to be handy. Your design is special because it uses recyclable material. I will make one very soon. Hope to get more ideas from you.

Nice idea. I like the resourceful use of old quarts of oil. I may make an attempt at making one of these.
