I made this little table to sit between two chairs in the living room. We used to have a little folding tray there to hold the remotes. They would always get knocked off, so I thought a little table would work better.

First I decided to put in a push-pull drawer allowing access from either chair. I had a couple of drawer pulls that have been just dying to be used so I put one on each end of the drawer.

The top is a single 16” wide piece of santos mahogany with an inlay made from peruvian walnut. The rest is made from african mahogany. The top is just a satin waterbased poly, but he rest I had to use dye to match the top.

I ran out of oak so I had to use poplar for the drawer sides. I pegged them to the drawer fronts with dowels.
I actually like them better than dovetails. It give them a distinctive look. I have been using them for years.

It’s 16” square and 25” tall.

Nice table and an interesting drawer implementation. I must say I can relate to you saying, ”I had a couple of drawer pulls that have been just dying to be used …” Every now and then something I have, tool or component, whispers, “Use me next.”

Pretty and practical, you can’t beat that.

Cool table. I like the inlaid patern on the top especially.

Fabulous piece Gary. I love the access from either side. The wood alone should make it a valuable piece.
Thanks for the post.

Gary, what a great piece. The inlay work adds a wonderful touch to the table. I agree with you on the dowels for the drawer…far more distinctive as it’s far less commonly done. -SST

Very nice job on this table, Gary. Nice design with the two way drawer. I’m going to have to try out some mahogany sometime. Recent check at the lumber yard and it’s cheaper than the QSWO that I normally use.

Gary, very nice!

I’m curious about the inlay… how did you do it?

Really COOL!

Really beautiful table, Gary!

Judging from the quality and quantity of the projects you turn out, I’m surprised you have a one-year-old. I wouldn’t have thought you left the shop long enough to manage that. <g>

Joe – I just created a blog on how I created the inlays.

Matt – The dowels are store bought “whatever wood” they happen to be. I cut and sand them then dip them in the same dye I used for the project and let them dry overnight. Then I just make sure I pound them on flush.

Great table, Gary. How closely did the the two mahogony species match? How did you adjust the dye that well?

Tom – The santos didn’t really need a dye. For the african I just happened to have a batch left
over from my Art Deco box that matched perfectly.

If I didn’t have some that matched I would just add more water or powdered dye to lighten/darken the batch.
You do need to dye some test pieces to get it right.

Gary, that’s a beautiful piece…very functional too. You did a great job of matching the wood colors. I like doweled drawer sides, even though I’m a hand-cut dovetail fan.

I just saw your blog on the inlay…that’s a cool technique. I’ll ask here too…I’m curious if the slots for the constrasting wood in the inlay was cut with a top flat grind tablesaw blade.

Thanks for posting.

Gary,

The wood is gorgeous and the inlay adds a nice detail to it too. I like the two-way drawer that is something that is not seen very often.

Very nice.

Gary,
A sweet little table.
I commend you for the use of the dowels in the drawer. Dovetails are of course the ubiquitous choice for this joint. But I see no good reason to exclude the dowel as a happy alternative choice for this joint. In fact their “smaller” presence is I think a fitting choice for this piece.
