I have been remodeling my condo for a little while now, and when I was browsing LJ’s for fireplace ideas I came across a project posted by Heath where he built a fireplace mantel out of MDF. This is my scaled down version. I made the columns and beam from MDF with a pine top. I added some 1/2 inch MDF trim on the columns and beam and some poplar crown molding around the shelf. Finally I painted it white. Also shown in these photos is the prefinished floor and slate tile that I put into my living room during the remodel. This project did not require a lot of fine woodworking but it was a fun project and the first time I was able to build something inspired by my favorite projects list on LJ’s. Thanks to Heath for the good idea.

That’s the way to do it! Looks like a happy fireplace :)
