Loose Lid Cherry Box Loose Lid Cherry Box Loose Lid Cherry Box Click the pictures to enlarge them

This box was pretty much just experimental…. it has a number of firsts for me: first time using corner splines, first time making a box with a loose lid held in place by the box lining, first time routing designs in a box, a nd first time using tung oil finish. After routing the designs with a template, I came back and filled them in partially with wood filler to add contrast, but still leave a 3D effect. The inlay is some of that antique stuff I scored a while back

All in all, this is a bit too busy for my own liking, but I got to practice some techniques I will use again in the future.

Very Nice Charlie. It’s good to try out different techniques.

I’m curious, the design templates you used…were those from a Spirocrafter? I bought one of those some time ago but haven’t used it yet. I’ve also had it in mind to try splines accross the miter like these but haven’t tried that yet either.

Thanks for posting.

Very nice work, how did you like the tung oil and did you do the designs free hand or with a template

Thanks, everyone.

Martin, you nailed it. I used templates from the Spirocrafter I purchased recently, although I didn’t exactly use them as per the instructions. I just used doublestick tape to hold them in place, and made my cut with a standard template guide and 1/8” spiral bit.

GMman: I used Minwax tung oil finish, which obviously has some varnish added to it. I really don’t see much difference, either in application or appearance, from the wipe-on polyurethane I normally use.

Another nice poolside box. You are making great use of that inlay you got.

Looks good, Charlie. I especially like the profile on the box edges.

I personally think the box is gorgeous! I really mean that. The inlay really sits it off, but the lines throughtout make it very special. Can’t wait for the next one.

Pretty spiffy box Charlie. The edge treatment is rather ingenious … always something unique in your work.

Nice looking box. The inlay work is great; I like the corner treatment; and the router work is a little different from the norm.

Wow Charlie! You are really pushing your skills into new territory. Nice work. That tung oil is a little bit more involved than the poly, but you did a very fine job of it. Keep up the good work.

Charlie,

This is a nice box and I like the edge details. Beautiful inlay too by the way.

Thanks for sharing.
