For our 5 year anniversary, I made my wife this Japanese tool box. The 5 year is the “wood” anniversary, and my wife lived in Japan for a time, so I thought it would be a nice tribute.
The box is made from white pine and meranti. The meranti accent pieces were toned with aniline dye in shellac. The wedges in the tenons are also meranti. The rest of the box was finished in blonde shellac.
This tool box was inspired by Mafe’s typically beautiful project as well as OWWM’s daninvan’s stunning tool box. It was also my first completely hand-cut mortise/tenon work, and first project with wedged tenons.

Nice design. I like the two tones and design elements like the through tenons with dark coloured wedges. It is beautiful and looks great, but a tool box for your wedding anniversary… are you sure?

Thanks, Peter. This wasn’t the main gift, and I don’t think she’ll use it for tools. 8^) The idea was to make something nice enough to stand on its own.

It’s clean lines and crisp details make it a real stand out.

It’s really incredible how a simple project can look elegant and designed, I love it.

Nice, I am digging the design, especially in the through tenon details.
