My girlfriend saw some purpleheart and said, “ohhh, make me something with that! A jewelry box.” I’ll take any excuse I can get to take on a fun project so I got some purpleheart from the woodsmith store and some maple leftover from some other project, and a little bit of Koa I’m gradually using up. I had recently seen a few pictures of boxes with the half-blind dovetails meeting the corner pieces, so I was looking for a project I could try that out on, this one seemed to fit the bill pretty nicely. So I went with maple sides into purpleheart legs, routing my dovetails on my porter cable jig. I cut the top inch off the box sides for the lid, and filled in the kerf with the koa. I also used the koa to fill the kerf around the drawer face. I carved some contour on the legs to add some more visual interest

I used some brusso 95 degree stop brass box hinges, pretty expensive but nice, though the lid could probably use a third.

The finish is nitro-cellulose laquer hand rubbed to a gloss finish. The white in the grain of the lid was in the wood, it isn’t polishing compound.

Wow bilsborough, this is an amazing box. I love the combination and have used that on a few boxes myself…at least the maple and purpleheart.
Your joinery looks excellent! Great design too!
I see from your project page you’ve made some guitars…in high school I made a few accoustics, but quit woodworking until about 5 years ago…now I’m making boxes primarily.
Anyway, great job on this box, I’m sure your girlfriend loves it.
Thanks for posting it.
