This was a real simple project that I was inspired to do by the material I stumbled upon. I bought an old bungalow as an estate sale, and there was a lot left behind – some treasures, mostly junk. While I was going through random lumber in the garage and mostly deeming it firewood, I came across a very dense piece and set it aside since it was obviously a hardwood of some type. It had a stamp on it with the name of a long gone furniture company in downtown Milwaukee (I’m kicking myself for forgetting the name). There was no finish on it, but each end was tapered slightly on the bottom side and had some mortises and holes for bolts, so it must have been on the inside of who knows what… maybe a bed? Anyway, I milled it flat & straight again and it turned out to be this very nice and thick piece of maple. I had been needing somewhere to put these small pieces a friend made, so I thought I’d make a simple shelf of it. The thin strip of black walnut on the front slides off to reveal mortises for the mounting screws. I’m already thinking of making a larger one of these for my living room… just waiting for the piece of lumber to come into my life :)
