I made a cajon drum in Spring of 2012 as a high school graduation present for my son who is a drummer. Taking a drum kit to a college dorm room just isn’t realistic. So, he took this and it doubles as a bedside nightstand! It’s 1/2” birch plywood with a very thin Paduk striking surface on the front. Cajons use a variety of wires or strings to get the snare snap to them. I went with an actual snare drum set of snares with a throw off mechanism inside the drum He can reach in and adjust the tension or disengage the snares altogether if he wants.
After coming home for the holiday break, he told me he’s had lots of positive comments on it and gets to jam with other college students often. His favorite “venue” is a nearby empty parking garage at night that he and his buddies go play in because of the dynamic acoustics.
Fun project for a VERY DESERVING & OUTSTANDING YOUNG MAN! Way to go, Jeremy!!!
