Gift Box

Made this box as a Christmas present for my aunt, who was over visiting from Germany. The sides are walnut, and the top is birdseye maple. The walnut came from a friend of my parents, and I carefully made it such that the grain carries all the way around the box (except for the bit of exposed end grain). Finished with semi-gloss brushed on poly. The poly made the ink from my stamp run, but its still readable. I’ve never had that happen before, I’m not sure what was different this time.

I had read so many horror stories about planing birdseye maple, but I really had no troubles at all, and I even forgot to replace the planer blades before I started!

I’m quite pleased at how well this turned out, and my aunt loved it.

Such a nice, clean design and ya can’t go wrong with birdseye and walnut!
