I made this for the mallet swap (found here: http://lumberjocks.com/topics/42130)

I had different ideas for the mallet but when I found out it was for Smitty I tried to up my game a little. It had to look nice siting on his beautiful bench.

I have been trying to make wooden screws for a while so I have had a few that have not worked out. So I came up with this idea to use one as a handle for this mallet.

After a lot of shaping and sanding on the lathe I think its fits pretty comfortably in the hand and adds some extra grip plus I think it looks cool.

This is my first carving mallet ever. It’s all hard maple, finished with Tried & True Danish oil and dark wax.
Now I think I’m going to have to make me one!

Thanks for looking,

Merry Christmas,

Mauricio

Way to bring a unique design to the mallet Mauricio. Looks great buddy. It will be interesting to see all of these mallets start showing up in pictures and project shots over the years. Merry Christmas.

It’s insane, but you’ve got a grip.

Reminds me of cabillos de bicicleta when I was growing up.

Unusal handle design, but I think it’ll look great on Smitty’s bench.

Yes, cool indeed! Maur, you did a wonderfully unique thing in this gift mallet- it’s got your personal woodworking journey built in. And I love it!

Thanks for the great comments everyone!

Shane you are so right, its going to warm our hearts each time we see our buddies projects and blog entries with our mallets making an appearance from time to time.
Smitty, thanks, and I’m glad you liked it. The finial on the butt of the handle is one of my favorite parts. I love highly polished end grain. You know at first it was dome shaped which made it look just like scchlong so I had to square it off. ;-) I think the way it is now matches the rest of the mallet better though.
Truly its more fun to give than to receive!

So much awesome. I literally laughed when I saw that first picture of Smitty opening the box to reveal a wooden screw handle… Epic

Thanks wahoo and Scotty!

Mos, you are right, I also got a kick out of that! I’m glad it didnt look more like a scchlong, otherwise it would have looked even more epic.
