My youngest grandson Vidar (13) made this box for his brother Erling. He scroll sawed the top bird pattern at an angle and pushed it up to make a relief motif. He also scroll sawed the the corner joints and the miters. The dark wood is Ash. The first photo shows the true color. The white wood is Linde which is in the the same family as Basswood and is slightly harder.

I think this is Vidar’s nicest project to date. Unfortunately we were both rushing to finish our last projects before Christmas and just finished last night so I haven’t been on LJ much for the last week. So I will take this opportunity to wish each and every one of you a A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Wow! He’s got some woodworking talent there. Just beautiful! Merry Christmas to you and yours. Tell Vidar he has got talent, and very nice craftsmanship.

Mike, Vidar has done a wonderful job here! Did he come up with the concept, or was it a team effort? Merry Christmas to you and yours, as well as a Happy New Year!

Than you. I will forward these kind thoughts to my grandson. Jonathan I saw some similar corner joints on a box in an ad in Scroll Saw mag., but I couldn’t remember which one. We also got the bird pattern from the same place. I did suggest the joints design and we found the pattern together. I would have given credit to the designers, but I can’t find the magazines. They are probably under a ton of refuse in my shop somewhere. I will post the info after I clean up the shop next week!

The talent obviously runs in the family. Very clever and nicely made. Tell him to keep it up if the interest is there, because obviously the talent is.

Thanks Steve. I hope Vidar will have woodworking as a hobby, but his ambition is to be a film director. His dad makes advertising films, so I think he has a good chance of realizing his dream if he sticks with it. My only talent is that I can do a lot of different things, but not necessarily well!
