This box is made to house a collection of watches, commissioned by the collectors partner. I came up with some initial sketches and was given fairly free reign with the design, it just had to hold at least ten watches.
The Timber is American black Walnut with the Lid, Drawer front and feet made from curly soft Maple (not actually soft at all !!). The linings and drawer box are from Sapele.
I lined the drawer and base of the top section in green leather for a nice contrast.
The joints are all hand cut, which took a while and the curly maple is very tricky to work with.
The watches are wrapped around individual cushions and placed into the little compartments, the one in the photo is just a test one, with my old Seiko on it.
The hinges have a positive stop at 93 degrees so the lid stays up.
It is much nicer in real life, but for some reason my camera makes it look sort of yellowish and won`t show the grain that well, maybe the lighting.
This was a fun project and I still have about 6 foot of curly Maple left.
