Walnut keepsake box

This is a box I finished before work this a.m. It is made from the same walnut slab that my neighbor had given me that I made a gift for his wife (previous project) out of. I am trading it to one of our secretaries at work-they took down a black walnut tree earlier this year & she is going to give me some of the wood.

The top is birdseye maple veneer which gives me fits when a few tiny cracks show up when I iron it on. I purposly soaked it 2 days in advance of installing it. This is the first time I used the decorative base/feet & I like what it does for the overall look of the box.

The last picture shows the knot in the rear of the box (the void went all the way through) -I filled it with 60 minute epoxy colored with painter ink.

As with most of my projects there are a few things i didn’t like (my screwups). I build my boxes as cubes and saw of the lid-one little messup here can creat nasty looking corners.

Several of the methods used on this box were first timers for me-that I learned from Tommy Mac’s Rough Cut episode on keepsake boxes.

Finish is 4 coats of shellac and buffed out with Briwax.

Thanks for looking.

That is so pleasing and lovely.

Very nice. Hard to beat birdseye maple/walnut combination. Love the feet!

Excellent work, Bill!

And don’t worry about minor flaws—no one else but you will ever know they exist!

Really nice… somewhat of a box maker myself, I always enjoy looking at other woodworkers pieces. This one and the others on your projects page are all very nicely done. Good work!
