The story behind these….I built one a couple years ago and the other this past summer…..

2 Christmas ago my mother in law gives me a book, “13 weekend woodworking projects”. One of the plans is for a very simple step stool. I’m thinking, gee, my wife sure does ask me to get stuff from the top of the cupboard a lot, so off I go and make the one on the left. I make it from pine and oak, and throw a walnut stain on the oak because I really had no idea what I was doing. I also ran table saw grooves along the stair treads to try to add some traction. Whole thing assembled using wood glue and 15g finish nails. It is solid and functional but honestly 2 years later I look at it and cringe.

ENTER THE MOTHER IN LAW…...

Literally every time she visits, she compliments the stepstol. “Oh Joe, it’s so nice” Thats when I think wow, you really have no idea what youre talking about do you? Anyway, if you come into my house and compliment a project of mine more then once, that basicly means youll be getting one for cristmas.

Hers is made from pine and red oak, no stain. Assembled with wood glue and 15g nails. I thought about DT joining the well….everything, and then thought, its my mother in law. does she even know what a DT is? Air nails and glue it is…..instead of table saw treads I used a roundover router bit. I like this much better but did not have a router when I built the first one. Finish is a high gloss varathane.

Feedback welcome

Simple, yet functional. Anybody would be glad to have those when they need to reach something. And they look great to boot.

Nothing wrong with either one. One simply represents the past and one the future.

Good job
