Recipe box

Project by MikeyFlies posted 561 days ago 304 views 1 time favorited 8 comments Add to Favorites Watch

I made this recipe box for my mother about 1 month ago. The handle is chechen which is a gorgeous wood when finished! The other woods are walnut, lacewood, ebony alowood, aspen, yellow heart, birch pywood for the bottom, and a tiny bit of bloodwood for the inlay.

I had a lot of fun making this box and learning to resaw wood for the bookmatched panels. It was then a lot of fun sanding (don’t have a planer and didn’t have a plane at the time). I made the lid out of two bookmatched slices of lacewood and came up with the handle design to hide the seam. Similarily I added the yellow stripe to the front and back to accent rather than hide the joint there. This my first attempt at slicing inlay bits on the bandsaw as well as fitting it in place.

The finish is tung oil with a water based top coat.

Wow… That’s a lot going on in that box. Did you make the medalion on the side as well?

Yes . I realized tha after the “design as I go” it really didn’t look much like a recipe box so I cut out a little disk of aspen and burned in the rolling pin and spoon emblem :)

That is a nice box you have created and it has a lot of details to it.

Well done.

Nice work – I really like the checkerbopard effect coming down the front of the box.
